Eagles rise 3 spots in FIFA rankings but still face tough 2018 World Cup sea

Nigeria celebrate qualification for next year’s World Cup at the expense of hard-fighting Zambia in Uyo

Nigeria have risen three spots to 41 in the latest FIFA rankings announced today, but they still face a difficult first round draw for next year’s World Cup in Russia because they look set to be in Pot 4 made up of the weakest teams for the tournament.

This latest rankings are to be used for the draw for the 2018 World Cup.

The draw will be staged on December 1 in Moscow.

The 1-0 win in Uyo over lowly ranked Zambia earlier this month moved Nigeria to No 41 in the world.

The Super Eagles are fifth in Africa going by the ratings, behind Egypt (2nd in CAF), who have also qualified for Russia 2018.

Tunisia (CAF 1), Senegal (3) and DR Congo (4) will most likely get more favourable draws should they qualify next month for the World Cup.

Nigeria were 44th in the rankings last month.
